Shopsmith Forums

I have just experienced another reminder of why I so appreciate this forum. I am currently a "pending member" of another wood working related forum. I have been attempting to become an active member of this other forum for nearly two weeks.

Some of my problems are my own fault. Others are just the way it is there.

While I do wish that this forum was a bit more restrictive on what gets posted, I do very much appreciate this forum and the members who hang here.

BTW - have the spammers been eliminated here. I have not experienced what I consider spam for weeks, maybe months. (knock on wood)

We be in total agreement regarding yer appreciation of this forum!


I would place the 'pending member' forum in the same category as neighborhood associations. Too much effort expended to control others. i.e. Think 'our' way or we shall take 'action' to change you!

I run into a lot of people on forums that have axes to grind and that is what they do in 90% of their posts.

On product supportted forums that can be expected to some degree. Example here on the Shopsmith forum we have people that have one objective convince the world that the Shopsmith is God's gift to woodworkers. On the Festool forum they have those whose objective is to convince the world that the Festool is God's gift to the woodworkers.

If these guys go to a non product supportted forum and constantly harp on SS or Festools it can get old real quick.

From time to time I see a Shopsmith owner trying to convince guys that have 500+ sq feet of shop space, 3hp cabinet saw and all the stationary equipment that what they really need is a Shopsmith. It is a pointless discussion and I think a lot of the other forums/board/discusssion sites try to eliminate such debates.

Someone ? once said the perfect form of government is a dictator....the hard part is finding a good dictator - or - Socialism is a great form of government on paper, everyone working for the common good...the problem is it doesn't work because not everyone will, that leaves us with a democracy (republic) while not perfect is better than whatever is 2nd. IMHO.

No, I don't want a dictator or a socialist government, unless of course I was the dictator, lol.

I'm not convinced all the spammers are gone. Not to give away their secrets but they all tend to have short names and respond to posts with short generic responses. They also seems to link to sources or sites dealing with a certain bandsaw sales company.

Also their posting seems to come in short bursts, they are gone for multiple days or weeks and show up with posts on 5-10 threads at a time. I'm not sure why they think it is worth it, but I'm guessing they are trying to build up their post levels and sprinkle in some positive reviews for their company.

Hey where can I find some bandsaw blades?

I am quick to recommend a Shopsmith to such shop owners but as a handy companion to what they have, not a replacement.

Today I started making a Lego table for one of the grandkids using wood saved from a forgotten bunkbed. I will accomplish this task, eventually, using the ShopSmith as my primary tool...table saw, band saw, disc sander, maybe drill press. Wouldn't it be nice to have a 1000sq ft shop with all the cabinet tools I wanted...yes, but I am having fun in the garage/shop, thinking out the project, resetting the SS as few times as possible, and making lots of sawdust that the SS dust thing is picking up.
Today was a fun day, and it is fun sharing my fun with my friends on this forum.

For me, this is one of two forums I belong to, the other being Nick Engler's. For me, these are the only two to belong to. Speaking of Nick, has anyone heard from him lately?
