I am relativly new to shopsmiths, my friend has an older one and 10er and he found me a mark V on craigslist. Paid $100 for it and for the most part it runs great. I noticed when I am turning a bowl that sometimes the when I put pressure on the inside of the bowl that the quill moves a bit.

After turning off the machine I noticed I could move the bowl up and down a bit while attached to the chuck and the I can move the shaft back and forth just a tiny bit. The main quill assembly is locked and doesn't move, but the inner shaft does. Is this a bearing(s) that need to be replaced or something else?

I am sure this is a simple issue, I am just uneducated on these machines so far. Any help is much appriciated!

Yep!

If you are intending on turning heavy objects(like large bowls) you should consider upgrading to a two bearing quill.

P.S. If back and forth is in and out towards the headstock, the knurled collar can be adjusted to minimize that play.

It may be a bearing, but first check that part #65 (Spindle Knob) on the diagram at -- http://www.shopsmith.com/service/headst ... iagram.htm -- is pushed tight against the bearing.

I will look at #65 when I get home and let you guys know. Thanks for the help!

What is the consensus on in and out play? Should there by zero?

Mine has about 5 thousandths in and out play but none side to side or up and down.

I've read all the old post on this subject and nothing I've tried has worked for me. I tried removing and replacing the knurled knob (#65), taking out and reinstalling the snap/retaining ring (#64) between the knurled knob and the bearing, I even removed the entire quill and tapped the splined end per an old Bill Mayo post on the same subject. None of it has made any difference.

I do note that on the on-line headstock diagram, there's a washer of some kind indicated between the retaining ring (#64) and the bearing, but it has no associated part number. I don't have one in my 520. I assume it is a part that was deleted.
