Hello all,
I hope your holidays will be kind to you. I joined a little over a month ago and then dropped off the face of the Earth. Well my busy season is over and the Restoration Of MAGNUS has began. I am being very detailed with my execution. I have a bit of OCD. I have 2 questions for everyone. Before that question I have to explain something about myself.

I worked for many a number a years for the Air Force Research Labs in Dayton OHIO. I worked for a rapid prototype design/implementation. My job was to utilize the random OTS(off the shelf) and try to make things better. My experience had me working with EOD, SECDEF, DARPA, JIEDDO. I was a creator. I was a person who had to turn ideas into reality and a relatively quick turn around.

I actually have 2 questions. One is this.
1. Do to the age of my 10ER I am restoring it back to original state however I am modifying it to be more efficient. I would like your ideas or inherent problems you have run into and you would like to see changed.
2. Will anyone have heartburn with this restoration. I don't want to cause static by no means and I will be asking questions, a lot of questions. I just don't want any FLAC.

I will be posting my present status here in a few hours with pictures. I am looking forward for anyone's ideas and please make them reasonable i.e. Time traveling machine or a machine that reads your mind or a standing auto manipulative machine. However ideas are welcome. I do have some major plans myself and if anyone is interested please contact me I will be more than happy to share.

You are working on your machine, right. If you were working on mine, I might have some heartburn but since you have no intention of altering mine...have at it. I'll be watching to see what alterations you come up with. One never knows what good tips might come out of these restorations.

I think Shopsmith owners are pretty open to alterations, modifications, and improvements! Give it a go and let us know what you come up with!

Some inherent problems with the machine: small table size and limited spindle speeds.

Its your machine to do what ever you want. Like Dusty said "One never knows what good tips might come out of these restorations". Will be looking for pictures.

I think you'll find that Shopsmith users are always looking to get more functionality out of their machines. I'm sure it has to do with the multi-function capability and it fitting in a small space.

You might find more of them are targeted to the Mark V, but you should be able to get some good ideas. We've seen some ideas such as a drum sander, but anything you come up with should be interested. I'll be watching for your updates. Pictures are always appreciated.

I stated the concern part because I have experienced that before by hardliners and when I succeeded all sorts of hell broke out. I just left that forum.

The table is one item I am changing. I am adding 1/3 more surface area. I am going to add mounts and add the capability for a routing table. I am adding small level indicators on all 4 side. I am adding a cross hatch groove network on the top of the table so it can become part of my "Lego" concept. Example being of this is I will fabric many ABS squares that match the footprint of the table. In 1 square I am going to embed a bearing bed. I will then place it over the table with the cross hatch grooves to "interlock" them. I just lower the table till I am level and Viola, I have surface that can help with maneuvering large material. I was actually thinking of adding another table just for the conveinance of more surface area at the working level.

Another idea everybody might be interested in is a very simple Digital Tach to verify your RPM. It will be very small in foot print and in the actual pulley cover. I am using the open source Arduino kits to build this. It will be very easy to apply to your machine and can take quite the beating. There will have to be periodic maintenance but nothing absurd. just clean the lens and change the battery once the power light starts blinking our out all together.

I have a plethora of ideas and I know i will only incorporate 2% of them

The pictures I do have now need to be re-sized real quick for proper attachment. Just give me a day or so.

'Purists' that suffer heart palpitations at the mere thought of anyone 'modifying':eek: a machine that is not 'their's' deserve each other.




Those of 'us' that are of an independent, thinking nature would not desire to be considered to be one of 'them'!;)

I want to thank you for introducing Arduino. This could be like going back in time. My first electronic bread board introduced me to the Intel 8080 processor and assembly language. Giant step forward and we have Arduino meets Lego.

This could be fun. There has to be a catch somewhere. I can see the cost factor for the modules that are available but not for the software/firmware. I gotta find out about what it costs to those modules first.

Hmmm, gotta know the programming language too.

A little browsing and I find that it is done in C++. Would you not know. I learned Pascal and then touched on C. Not C++ but C. I don't even have the code manuals anymore.

Do I really want to go back that far. Maybe sawdust is enough.
