Does anyone know what the little sticker on the back of a 1981 power head that reads 510R means? The rest of the machice looked like a 520.

Yes I got a sticker like that when I upgraded my 500 to a 510 many years ago.

Hi,
I think that means that someone did the upgrade from a 500 to make it a 510r and they put the stickers on like they should have. The 520 kit I got did not have a sticker that said 520r....
My used 510 came with the same sticker on it, and the date manufacture of the machine was 1980 so it was clearly a 500 when purchased and later upgraded. I left the sticker on it but it is now a 520.

Thanks Ed. It was in mint condition with all the 520 upgrades for 650, so probably not a bad price.

I got my spring project days in the mail today. I upgraded my 500 to a 510 using parts from another source than SS

I see the upgrade from 510 to 520 with two version for 1986 or later and prior to 1986. Does anyone know what the difference would be?

If I remember right, it has to do with how the rails are mounted to the table on the 510.

Some one out there is SS Land should have the official install directions for the 520 upgrade on machines prior to 86 and some one is bound to have the instructions for the after 86 model. I am curious as I just acquired a 520. After using a 500 for years that 520 table is sure large.

If the price was not the same I would say it had to do with the two-bearing quill. Other differences are the switch and a change from bolts to studs on the tables. None of these things should have anything to do with the upgrade. I did a pre-1986 upgrade how do I compare my instructions to someone else. This is something Shopsmith will need to answer.
Thank You

Thank you folks,
I will call SS from work and find out. It has my curiosity. The bolts vs. studs part totally makes sense to me though so I had better go out and see how my tubes are mounted. I never took them off yet. But the table top is like night and day from the 500 model. It should warm up to the mid 40's today so I will go out to the shop and look thank you again all.

I also got the small semi-circular "510r" sticker when I upgraded from 500 to 510 back about '92.
By-the-way, Highland woodworking (
http://www.highlandwoodworking.com) has a special on small (5100 BTU) electric heaters for $29.95. This does a great job of taking the chill off working in my garage on cold mornings. Highland Hardware is in Atlanta. Their parent company, KIng Hardware was a Shopsmith dealer back in the early 70's.
