Screw hole sizes different

My newly owned 55 Mark V has different hole sizes.
The pan head screw has diameter of 5/32". But most of the holes' size are bigger than that may be around 6/32".

The previous owner used different different screws. if I use the 5/32 most the screws feel loose. If I use 6/32" screw some of the still too tight.

What should I do?

It would not be wise for me to answer that question without knowing more about which specific screws you are talking about.

However, if cosmetics is all you are concerned with, I would suggest that you use screws with a common head type and not worry about the difference in size. Secure is what is important.

You could drill out all of the holes to a common larger size. My concern would be loss of structural integrity. Again, which holes.

You could use JBWeld to fill and cover all of the holes and when well cured, drill them all out to the original (small) size.

Some of the holes use tinnerman clips don't they? Or are the clips missing and someone chose to use larger screws?

In your picture, it appears that the phillips head is an extra screw and the hex head on my machine screws into a tinnerman. That is the motor pan being attached to the headstock, correct.

It seems that the tinnerman clips are missing.

Do the holes to hold the motor pan need tinnerman clip?
and they are bigger than other holes like those to hold the belt cover?

Where to buy the tinnerman clips?

BTW my SS is a 55 greenies.
I have not purchased tinnerman clips for several years but I would bet that ACE Hardware has them as should any large hardware store. Lowe's probably has them in their hardware section.

To hold the motor pan securely, I would think that tinnerman (or similar) would be required. The casting would not produce adequate thread depth without some sort of clip. (My humble opinion)

Tinnerman clips are used in lieu of threads when installing screws into thinner metals.

Does my A headstock use tinnerman clip?

It seems my A headstock use the screw to go into the casting without using the clip.
am I right?

On mine I just drilled out all the holes and then tapped them so they would all take the same size screw. No messing around with clips and everything is the same size. Of course you have to have a tap to do this. You can probably pick up one for what a complete set cost 50 years ago.

What I have done, is attach a kep nut(ext tooth lock washer attached) and jb welded them in place(on the inside). On those holes with the original threads, I installed a screw, then threaded the nut onto the screw so the threads are continuous.

If the through holes have been drilled larger, a washer may be used to keep the screw head from coming through the hole.

The original threaded holes and screws were 8-32.

I do not know what you are referring to as a '5/32' unless that is the screw head od.

5/32 meant the OD

That is an 8-32 self 'tapping' screw. Creates an SAE standard threaded hole.

Different from self 'threading' which resemble a sheet metal screw thread(course pitch).

Always be sure to align the threads when reinserting them.
