Okay, I thought, that I would look at another head stock to see I experienced the same clicking noise that I have with my original head stock. I notice that this one had off brand belts and the speed control dial was off. I decided to crank it up to see if there was any bearing noise and it goes pop and don't run no more. What have I done? thanks for your help in advance.

It is awfully hard to diagnose this sort of problem without being there and seeing; however, I would almost bet that when you cranked the speed up that some how you pulled the power wire against something metallic and shorted power to the chassis. The pop being an arc that either burned a wirte through or you tripped a circuit breaker.

Unplug it, open and do a go visual inspection.

Electrical or mechanical? Internal noise or the on the wall circuit breaker popped?

If mechanical/internal, I would determine if you can rotate the shaft manually. Tis possible the motor belt has dropped down too low in the idler pulley and become jammed. If so, manual rotation will reveal that(it will not turn but a partial turn).

Either way at least partial disassembly tis next.

Hey Dusty, I did a visual and the circuit breaker was tripped. I did not see any wires out of place or where one might have arc against something metal. And yes the next thing a disassemble to clean and reset the speed control. thanks

Something caused the breaker to trip. It may have just been a momentary short circuit and you may not see any damage (there may have been no damage). Just make sure the wires are secure inside the headstock and not positioned where anything that rotates can get ahold of them.

Question is, did it attempt to rotate at all?

Other ?? Any thing else on that branch circuit? 15A or 20A breaker? Speed control setting? Motor size(3/4 or 1 1/8)? History of headstock?

When did the breaker pop?
If you try to start a SS on too high a speed setting it draws enough amps to trip some breakers.

If it runs at slow speed let it run a while then try a higher speed. Could be bound up

I'm going to blow it out and put it back together. It is a 1 1/8. I think, a 91. I don't know the history except the speed control was all out of whack. It has an off brand poly V belt so I suspect the previous owner put it back together and did not attempt to fix the speed control. thanks for the input. I was hoping not to make a major project. We will see, right?

The pop was in the motor which was when the breaker opened. I was cranking the speed up with it pop. Like I said before I will clean her up and see what happens. I'm also wondering if too much dust in the motor can cause a short circuit?
