Does anyone know the original size of the Caster Wheels for the 520. Mine are very warn and I would like to replace the original wheels with polyurethane which would run smoother over the uneven surfaces in my shop.

What I need to know is the diameter of the wheel when new, I think the width is 3/4" but I will check with a caliper before I proceed and I also need the diameter of the hole. I will be replacing the rivet with a bolt and lock-nut.

I know it is cheaper to buy new casters from Shopsmith (4 cost $11.04 on sale) but I am looking for a better wheel with bearings.

2".......Grizzly #HO727 Polyurethane @ $1.25 work great. As the wheels fail on my machines I replace the wheels with these. You will be amazed at how quiet the machine is when moving.

I should have added that I use a 1/4"x1 1/4" Flange bolt or shouler bolt (few cents more) along with a nylock nut for the axel.

How far do you move the machine that you need quiet wheels?

I'm still on my original set 20 years later, but I guess my mileage is low!

My shop has several seams in the cement and is small so I move my machines quite a bit and once in a while I break a wheel hitting one of the seams. I also use the old 10ER casters on some of my home built machines and they used metal wheels back then and believe me they were loud. I have not had one of the urethane wheels break yet. I am just one of those people who can not leave well enough alone and always looking for a better mouse trap. Try them you just may like them.

Inasmuch as I'll need about 16 wheels, to replace casters on my 500/510 and now 520 SS, plus the stand alone equipment, I went to the Grizzly site to take a look.
They show a 8.2mm bore for the HO727. Doesn't that cause a lot of "space" using a 1/4" dia. shoulder bolt? Can I use 5/16" bolts, or they just hard to come by?

8.2mm (.323) is the bore through the wheel then you you have a steel bushing (part of the wheel package) that goes through the 8.2mm bore bringing the actual axel bore down to just over .250 inch. You can use .250 inch shoulder bolts or flange bolts with nyloc nuts. You can use a shim washer or two if you want to get fancy with a perfect fit. I will try and get a pic of the components tomorrow as I need to make a set for a new 520 I have acquired.

Order with care the Grizzly site had the wrong pictures and I ended up ordering the wrong wheels. Grizzly was happy to exchange them if I spent $8 to return the wrong ones which only cost $5, I just bougth another set which have not arrived yet.


The good news for you is you can order all 16 and still only pay the same $8.40 in shipping as I paid to ship 4 wheels.

I usually order twenty wheels at a time from Grizzly and my last three orders have been correct and on time. I have found them quite fair to deal with. Take a look at their 1/2" bore carbide shaper cutters and their 1/2" arbor for use in a router table. I use several of them and have found them to work quite well. Do post a pic of the completed caster when you finish them.
