I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you that read this a very Happy New Year. May the next year be full of good and be plagued with less of the strife that has been so predominant for the past two or three years.

To help make this a reality, I am making a New Year's Promise.

Dusty's New Year Promise for 2013 and on.

I shall strive to avoid all negative political discussions and all religious discussions here on the forum. I shall not give up my right to have these opinions. I am only promising not to burden my favorite wood working forum with those opinions.

Disclaimer: If, by some chance, any of you want to know what I think about any political issue or political event, just PM me. I will be more than happy to tell you "what I think". I do not expect to be inundated with requests.

Furthermore, I hereby challenge all of you to do the same. Let us make this back into a Woodworking Forum.

To all SS users, may all your wood be splinter free and all your cuts be where you want them to be.

I have but one resolution, and that is to remain retired! So far, it's been easy. We'll see what tomorrow brings.

Last year was not a good year for the pack rats. I waged war and I think I won. I have not seen signs of those nasty critters for months now. I attribute that mostly to the removal of nesting places. I have nearly stripped my property of prickly pear cactus. They (the pack rats) eat the fruit from prickly pear and nest in under them.

Dusty, I will never start a political or religious discussion but I will not shy away from joining one either. I'm looking forward to a year of learning new woodworking skills and beginning my search for new projects for Christmas presents in 2013. Happy New Year.

I didn't realize at first you were referring to real pack rats...I thought it was a reference to excessive clutter and/or an inability to get rid of stuff (that sort of pack rat has infested my world for my entire life)...now I've learned that there actually is a critter called a pack rat out there Happy New Year to everyone - may it be a wonderfully productive woodworking year for all.

And amen to steering away from the political/religious threads...I don't participate in those anyway...I learned long ago such discourse never swayed anyone's typically very polarized opinions but rather just further raised blood pressure over contentious issues, which is counterproductive to why I enjoy woodworking in the first place (something to do to relax and focus on the joys of life instead of the unpleasantries the media and others constantly bombard us with). Hopefully 2013 will bring positive change in this country and there will be less to grumble about all the way around

Dusty while I tend to agree with you, it is still nice to have a place where we can blow off a little steam. We are all friends here and how many of us haven't solved the world's problems in the company of our friends.

I know when I talk to my brother we often do it. What we are both careful of is not challenging the other statements but simply adding our own. Both have an outlet and neither was called wrong.

I always like "If I were King" approach to discussions on politics and economy. That way I get to vent and nobody is slammed for having a differing opinion.

So Dusty I do hope you consider revising your resolution

Happy New Year from Kansas to one and all. Snowy and cold here today. We need the moisture so I am up with it.

In keeping with the spirit of the ever growing push to recycle, I am using 90% recycled material for New Year's resolutions this year.
Continued weight loss.
Continued watching cholesterol intake.
Continued monitoring of blood glucose.
Etc.
Etc.
Etc.
Continued sneaking of tool finds into the woodshop.
I am going to push even harder to avoid spending time with always negative or disruptive people (even extended family).
I have also vowed in recent years to make a lot of friends among the younger set. That was precipitated by so many of my old friends going underground in increasing numbers.
I also am going to work harder at avoiding activities that require me to be on any kind of schedule. Being able to get in the truck and go where ever we want at the drop of a hat is very important to us.
This year "WILL" be the year I replace my old 4 cylinder Super Sport bike with a heavier road bike with more comfortable seating... Somehow it has kept getting shoved back but not this year.
We have also promised ourselves that this spring we are going to get a decent pair of bicycles and ride many of the numerous community walking and bike trails that are now being built here. This isn't mountain bike riding, these are pretty nice trails (and yes we will both be armed ).
Horse hugging will remain very important.
