I ordered from Rockler, and UPS transferred the package to the post office. Why didn't UPS delver to me? Now I have to wait another day.

UPS (and others) have found it costs less to have USPS deliver to 'home' addresses than do so themselves. After all a 'mailman' will visit all home addresses almost every day. USPS uses smaller vehicles as well.

I'm in exactly the same position (except a different part of the country). If UPS had delivered it, I would have had it last year. Instead, they delivered it to the Post Office last year. Now I have to wait for the the Post Office to find it (didn't find it today!) and who knows how long that will take! If the shipping wasn't free, I would call to complain.

That would be called UPS Mail Innovations. And no, I'm not being snide, but that is the service where UPS delivers to the local sorting hub and US Postal delivers the final leg. I've found that in the beginning if could sit in for a couple days at the sorting hub, but the last year it seems to be a day or two at most.

Fedex's version is called FedEx SmartPost. Locally, Rockler uses a deliver service called Speed-Dee delivery because I live close to their warehouse. Wasn't Speed-Dee delivery the guy from Mr. Rogers neighborhood?

Interesting - I've never heard of them doing this. Do folks that have this happen live in a particularly rural or remote location? I live in a small town that is 5 hours from anything of significance and UPS (and FedEx) always delivers right to my door, unless someone sends something to my PO Box instead of my street address and then it's a whole different matter.

When I lived "in the city" this happened all the time. And I hated it. I felt like I was being cheated by UPS. I paid for UPS shipping, I want UPS to deliver it!

Now that I live out in the sticks, I've never had it happen.

No, I live in a big city. It is all done for the sake of being cheap and cutting costs. If you are going to offer free shipping, then you find ways to cut corners and save. Amazon does the same type of thing with their free Super Saver Shipping, except that they allow a delay in the shipping of around 3-7 days. I'm not sure if they wait until the shipping container is full or they sort by regional areas, but the Post Office gives them a break and the package takes longer to arrive.

Btw, Speed-Dee Delivery or actually, Speedee Deliver was the guy from Mr. Rogers. He was known as Mr. McFeely - certainly a name that would never be used on a children's program these days.

There is thread on another woodworking forum talking about UPS. They were saying that UPS shut down the last 5 days for the holidays.
