A couple of weeks ago, I received a new catalog from Lee Valley, one of my favorites. Pouring over the pages, I spotted a new DVD on Sharpening, by Leonard Lee, item no. 70M0358.

This came about at just the right time as my pile of tools that need sharpening was growing to the point that I could not ignore it any longer. For whatever reason, my interest was peaked, and so I ordered same.

After taking delivery, and reviewing same, I was very pleased with my purchase. Mr. Leonard Lee demonstrates sharpening techniques, using water stones, and a strip sander (Not SS). He explains the importance of edge shapes, choosing the correct bevel angle, abrasives to use, how to flatten stones.

He then proceeds to demonstrate how to sharpen chisels, plane blades, knives (kitchen variety), cabinet scrapers, carving and turning tools.

He uses Lee Valley sharpening products for the most part, but shows/demonstrates how to make sharpening jigs for the pain in the butt carving tools.

Mr. Lee uses a no nonsense, down to earth approach, with excellent closeups showing exactly what he is doing and what you want to achieve. His methods are simple, and straight forward.

Needless to say, I was very pleased, especially since I have most the products that he demonstrates with, and the fact that he cleared up some "old time" misconceptions about sharpening tools.

Yes, I was inspired, and immediately went out to my garage, and started to sharpen some tools. I thought that my tools were sharp before, but Mr. Lee managed to help me put a real edge on my tools.:D

I recommend it for anyone, no matter what their level of expertise is!

That is a great review. I don't think that anyone can ever learn enough about sharpening. I may have to give that a shot. Thank you.

For those of you who live within reach of Atlanta, Highland Hardware ( http://www.highlandwoodworking.com ) is hosting a class on February 4 "Sharpening with Jim Dillon".

Class size is 12 and tuition is $75. A new Narex chisel is included in the tuition. The class runs from 5 to 9 PM.

Dillon's recommended reading for the class is "Complete Guide to Sharpening" by Leonard Lee.
