Velcro Disc Sanding

Just received the new SS catalog. Page 22 has a velcro disc sanding package. I use velcro discs on my hand sanders, but I question if the larger disc will hold on the edge. Any experience?

Oh Yeah! The Velcro is quite strong. It holds the cloth backed sandpaper on real well. One potential problem. If you want to sharpen tools on the disk - you'll have to buy another disk. Tools will cut right through the cloth backed sandpaper and probably wreck the Velcro.
I didn't want to buy another disk, so I sharpen my lathe tools on the belt sander, thereby eliminating this potential problem.

I have the velcro on mine. I have had ZERO problems with my disk sander. Changing sand paper is sooo easy. Changing grit back and forth is sooo easy. Unlike charlese, I sprung for the additional disk so that I can use it to sharpen my tools:D .

Thanks, I have two discs now, as I keep 80 on one and 120 on the other. This will give me more flexability. Thanks

Hi All
I'm looking at page 22 of the current sales flyer. Can anyone comment on the difference between Item E ( Velcro ) and Item H (pressure sensitive) package?
I'm brand new to Shopsmith and havent yet had to change the existing sandpaper on my steel disc. I like the idea of the Velcro but am wondering if having two more 12" steel disc's is the way to go.
Thanks All

most likely you have pressure sensitive sandpaper, the paper is glued the the steel disk. When you remove the paper you throw it away. This tends to get expensive if you change paper frequently. Depending on how many different grits you want you need one disk per grit.
The alternative is to get one Velcro upgrade and "glue" that to the steel disk, than you get velcro sandpaper, you can than change paper very quickly without damaging the paper when you remove it.
"glue" is actually included with the pressure sensitive paper or Velcro conversion and is activated by pressure.

The velcro package allows you to change your sandpaper quickly and easily. And you can reuse the paper as it comes off without damage. You should not use this system if you intend to do any sharpening, as the tools that you are sharpening will cut through the paper.
The preassure sensitive package requires that you clean your disk each time you change grit. I think that I read somewhere on this forum where some woodworkers try to save this paper for reuse, but I have not had any luck doing that.
I have one disk with the velcro system and one disk to sharpen with.

Sounds like Velcro is the way to go.
This was my first post, and I'm amazed at the quick responses from other members. I purchased my SS 510 in dec and have been purusing this forum since then. I'm amazed at the amount of unbiased info that gets posted, by both members and Nick.
Thanks Again
