Miter slots

Post by pieceseeker »

Hi again! Are the miter T-slots in the main table a standard size. I believe the standard size for cast-iron table saws is 3/4" x 3/8". According to a sales person at Rockler, aluminum table top miter slots are a different/smaller size. Rocklers jig building parts only has the standard size miter bars. I know a person can make their own out of oak or plastic.

Just wondering.....planning to make a lot of jigs in the future.
P.S. I could not find the measurement in the specifications on the SS site.

Yes they are a standard size, BUT it's the size from the early 50's.

I just measured mine with a calipers...then planed a piece of 3/4 oak down to thickness so I can rip strips off of it to use as miter bars.

I don't remember the size off the top of my head...but I want to say they measure .731.

I have a 510... I'm certain the miter slots are the same width regardless of which table you have.

Hope that helps

Did some more surfing, looks like a product called ZeroPlay( also sold at Rockler) will specifically fit a Shopsmith table or the "standard" table saw miter slot. Its about $16 a set. Its adjustable!

I have a couple of dozen Shopsmith miter gauges from quite old to "T" slot. I think I am pretty well set for jig making. :)
Good hard hardwoods work well especially with waxing.
I want to drop in at the farm store when I feel a little richer than I do this month and pick up a 4' x 8' sheet of high density poly. IIRC it was about $40 to $45 a sheet the last I looked. I have a number of places including the western boot rebuilding shop where I want to use some of it.
I would again advise going to Walmart or similar and looking at various high density cutting boards in the housewares dept. to saw up into guide bars. It will always slide smooth and not shrink or swell with humuggity changes. :)

I keep some thin shim strips handy so I can use some of my SS plastic feather boards in the 3/4" slot of my Ridgid TS-3650. I have not tried it but I'm sure I could also use a SS mitergauge in it with a shim.
You know, I just might look at converting one of my SS clamping miter gauges to use on that saw regularly.
