Looking to Purchase

Post by teamvertical »

I am hoping this forum could help me out. Could you look at this add and let me know from the photo's how this looks. I have read most of the articles on purchasing a used SS. According to the owner he only has what is in the photos. I think it looks to be a 510 model, is that correct? The serial number is 022688 - is that a 1987 model? Any suggestions you have would be appreciated.

Thanks from a new guy

510
Appears complete base model with casters<<<<<< I stand corrected - tain't 'complete'.
Condition looks good
022688 is date code
reasonable asking price IMHO
Offer less though!

If has been 'in storage', minor maintenance is needed(lubing etc.)

We assume you know to NOT turn the speed control dial unless shafts are turning.

Well it looks okay, but is missing a few things. Like the drill chuck, tail stock, tail stock center, upper and lower saw guard, saw blade and arbor. It was built Feb. 26 1988.
SS 500(09/1980), DC3300, jointer, bandsaw, belt sander, Strip Sander, drum sanders, molder, dado, biscuit joiner, universal lathe tool rest, Oneway talon chuck, router bits & chucks and a De Walt 735 planer,a #5,#6, block planes. ALL in a 100 square foot shop.

Safety kit, lathe tools, lathe drive center, screw center...

It does have the tail stock and dead center and a blade....

It will take some extra money to get the extra parts plus the headstock is an unknown, could be OK or messed up so who knows if that price is good for you. The more mechanically inclined you are the better the deal as most repair/refurbish work on a shopsmith can be done by a handy person.

If you get it and then don't like it you can always farm it out to Tucson. It will have a good home here. Regular clean, wax and oil - that is all it needs to last a long, long time.

Expect it to run a little rough and noisy until the belts loosen after a long storage.

With no accessories and basic parts missing - the price is a little high.

It's a good deal IMO if it has all the basic items missing from the photos as noted above. If that stuff is missing, I'd offer $200-$250 with cash in hand and see if he'll bite. It looks in good shape and $350 is a pretty reasonable price
'78 Mark V 500 #27995 (my Dad bought new)
'82 Mark V 500 #96309
Two '47 10E's (serial#4314+6149) - one a dedicated drill press and the other a lathe
Two 10E/ER in parts slowly being restored…#26822 and #????? (SS plate missing)
SPT's: Bandsaw, Belt Sander, Strip Sander, Jointer, Jigsaw, Biscuit Joiner

Wish it was in Illinois. It would be in my shop already. Can't find 510 here that cheap very often.

Thanks everyone for looking at this with your comments. It appears that about $300 worth of standard components are missing. I will be looking at it later today with the missing parts as a consideration. I will let you know how it turns out.

Thanks

I think your missing stuff estimate is high. Just do not tell the seller that!:D

Most of those things are found often on e-bay and are essentially wear proof.
