Info on putting Mark VII motor into Mark V?

For anyone who has put a Mark VII motor into your Mark V headstock - any tips on how you went about it? what did you have to do, bracket wise, to make it work?

I know the mighty Bill Mayo has, but the best I have heard is "yup, I have done it before". Photos would be great, and/or measurements ;)

I too would like to know about this. I have a GE Mk. 7 motor and really liked the ability to reverse it for some applications. I've parted out a lot of the Mk. 7 along with the switch, so having a reversing switch is also an issue. Mr.
Grange, do you have some suggestions?

I have tried to remain quiet on this question, still are we speaking of Mark VII or Mark 7 motors. Huge difference here. Jim

VII!!!

A GE MVII motor has 6 external wires.

The blue and white wires are the run winding.

The black, red,orange,purple are the start/reverse circuit.

For one direction, the red connects to the purple, and the black connects to the orange.[reverse]

For the opposite direction, the red connects to the orange, and the black connects to the purple.[forward]

Power is switched to the blue and white run winding wires.

A 3PDT center off switch will work, but thee must be prudent and always wait for it to stop between direction changes.

A 4PDTcenter off would be better as it allows you to switch both sides of the power in.

A DPDT(forward/reverse) and a DPST(on/off) combination would also work.


The A.O.Smith motor has different wire colors.

If the A.O.Smith motor has the start relay, another scenario exists.


Mounting the MVII motor in a M5/V motor pan will present a couple problems. The mounts are different, and the air flow is radically different.

I really think this not a good idea. The vacuum shaft will be in the way! The mounting and air flow changes are difficult. The MVII has both intake and exhaust vents in the bottom of the motor pan and does NOT have a fan sheave 'housing'.

The 1 1/8 hp Emersons are not 'reversible', but the GE and A.O.Smith 'might' be. The GE 3/4 hp is reversible by way of internal rewiring. I have not yet dug into an A.O.Smith M5/V motor. I assume the GE 1 1/8 hp is similar to the 3/4 hp as far as access to internal splices is concerned.

If I do the install I will cut the vacuum shaft off with a hacksaw. Ultimately, its highly unlikely this motor will ever see another MarkVII (in fact, its more likely to see the recycle pile in comparison). I have a full working control panel, so I would probably just use that initially. So really its a matter of the mounting situation, and perhaps the airflow.

Problem is too many pictures was taking at various statages for several difficent motors. Now it is hard to determine what pictures go with what motor. My filing system sucks for easy access. I was able to get a dozen back Mark V motor clamps which fits the Mark VII motor and the screw holes have the same width as the motor pan holes. I have to drill 2 new inner motor holes in the motor pan. I have 3 Mark VII motors to rebuild and mount in Mark V motor pans each with a reversible switch. I will list them on Ebay when ready. I still have 3 AO Smith 1 1/8 HP motors to be reversed and offered on Ebay. I plan to take pictures this time. Mh converted reversible motor comes with reversible motor, a new ON/OFF switch and a new FWD/REV switch along with a new power cord. Be patience waiting on my replys for I overload very easy.

Referencing Bill's post above, The motor to pan mounting brackets are a key detail. IIUC, the 'inner' end of the motor would mount the same as a M5/V motor. The absence of the fan shroud casting requires a second mounting bracket for the 'outer' end and drilling holes in both the motor shell and the pan.

Since you have the control switch, IIWM, I would look for a MVII motor pan. It is slightly wider(~3/16"), but is the same length.

My MARK VII motor is still in the pan, controls and all. I hadn't considered just trying to adapt the pan, but I suppose that's one possibility.

Any chance that we could get some photos? I finally have time to take a look at this again, and saw my mark VII motor sitting in a tub...lonely, longing for a home in a mark V.

The MVII motor pan will fit onto the m5 headstock with 1/8" spacers on the side screws. The front is a different shape and the screw hole(s) be different. Not sure about the motor pulley location(up/down, in /out). The belt covers have different contours.

When I get a chance I will take pix of a M5 casting sitting on a MVII motor pan etc. The MVII switch light shield will slightly interfere with the casting.

And then there is that front vac shaft etc.

Otherwise it will go.
