A GE MVII motor has 6 external wires.
The blue and white wires are the run winding.
The black, red,orange,purple are the start/reverse circuit.
For one direction, the red connects to the purple, and the black connects to the orange.[reverse]
For the opposite direction, the red connects to the orange, and the black connects to the purple.[forward]
Power is switched to the blue and white run winding wires.
A 3PDT center off switch will work, but thee must be prudent and always wait for it to stop between direction changes.
A 4PDTcenter off would be better as it allows you to switch both sides of the power in.
A DPDT(forward/reverse) and a DPST(on/off) combination would also work.
The A.O.Smith motor has different wire colors.
If the A.O.Smith motor has the start relay, another scenario exists.
Mounting the MVII motor in a M5/V motor pan will present a couple problems. The mounts are different, and the air flow is radically different.
I really think this not a good idea. The vacuum shaft will be in the way! The mounting and air flow changes are difficult. The MVII has both intake and exhaust vents in the bottom of the motor pan and does NOT have a fan sheave 'housing'.
The 1 1/8 hp Emersons are not 'reversible', but the GE and A.O.Smith 'might' be. The GE 3/4 hp is reversible by way of internal rewiring. I have not yet dug into an A.O.Smith M5/V motor. I assume the GE 1 1/8 hp is similar to the 3/4 hp as far as access to internal splices is concerned.
