Just curious about something

Post by pieceseeker »

Thought I would just post this question for grins and giggles.

Has anybody ever seen a used ShopSmith anything, at a Goodwill store?

Just wondering if a seller would have gotten so frustrated and given up on selling their old ShopSmith and instead took it to Goodwill and do a tax deduction for a "donation".

Just wondering......:D

I have seen Shopsmith's at Habitat Restores. In both instances they were priced quite high and later prices lowered. Goodwill, nope never seen that. Jim

Habitat Restore overpriced!

Our store once in a blue moon gets plywood and sells it for a dollar a sheet when they obviously could get more. So someone shows up and buys the whole stack and then it sits for weeks until they finally can pick it up. On the other hand, they got a couple of trailers of snow blowers and were trying to sell for higher prices than on the deal sites. Selling snowblowers when it is snowing and winter is a lot easier than when the snow goes away, for their sake I hope they remember that.

Haven't seen a Shopsmith at either, but truthfully my time at Goodwill is in the donation line.

The machine I saw was an old greenie in very poor condition. The fellow in the store commented that he had been told it was a collector item, thus the price. I confess to no idea what it sold for.

I did see a nice 510 for sale last year on Craigslist, at a place benefitting Habitat for Humanity. Good machine, good cause, and I would have bought it had I been able to make it over to Dayton in the next week or two. Unfortunately for Habitat, a 2005 Model 520 in my neck of the woods came up on eBay for about the same price, and I snatched it up instead.

Doesn't mean you won't find them. Bought a very good Mk. 5 with a band saw and other stuff about 15 years ago at Salvation Army in Fullerton, CA for $175. It had just been put on the floor and after I paid for it there were people on it like ants on a bug. But that was then and this is now. Then we didn't have Craigslist or eBay.

I'm not sure a place like Goodwill would accept a SS for donation - it may depend on the given store but virtually all of our local thrift type stores don't like to accept anything with a plug for donation...been stuck with too many junk TVs and stereo components over the years I'd guess. A SS is obviously different than electronics but still, given the size and complexity (at least to your average donation receiver person), I'd think it's not the kind of thing they'd likely want to take on. I also think that your average person who wants to get rid of their SS, either for $$ or free, probably doesn't have the ability or desire to load it up and take it to a place to donate it and would rather find a taker who will load and haul it away themselves.

'82 Mark V 500 #96309
Two '47 10E's (serial#4314+6149) - one a dedicated drill press and the other a lathe
Two 10E/ER in parts slowly being restored…#26822 and #????? (SS plate missing)
SPT's: Bandsaw, Belt Sander, Strip Sander, Jointer, Jigsaw, Biscuit Joiner

The only people that will pick up is the Salvation Army I think.

You may very well be correct where you live but it is not universal. Charities other than the SA do pick up here in Tucson, as an example.

I have seen Shopsmiths in Goodwill type stores, auctions and pawn shops.

Usually the goodwill type stores don't know what they have and sell the various parts by themselves. I listened to one guy complain that he bought a saw blade but couldn't get the stupid storage holder off of it. He thought the SS arbor was for storage. I didn't want to break the news that once he did get it off he would have an arbor hole bigger than the 5/8 he expected.

My son in law bought a SS from a pawn shop, came with a really nice 4ft x 2ft by 6 foot high tool cabinet built especially to hold the Shopsmith tools and things. It was like a double high tool box with a set of drawers for small things like extra set screws, couplers, wrenches, and etc. Very nice, but he got rid of it. Remember he is just a son in law. :D

The one at auction was so beat up I suggestted they shoot it to put it out of it's misery.
