Hi all. Long time lurker and new shopsmith owner with too many questions than I can type, but here it goes. Got a old greenie from the 50's with jointer, band saw and many bits, turning tools, and parts. Like you have said it does get addicting. The following week I picked up a 1983 mk5 for $50 in great shape, but with no accessories. My first of many questions is are the parts interchangable? I know the headstocks are different, and later table systems have also changed. I assume the bandsaw and jointer are, but the fence from the greenie does not seem to fit the gray machine. Are the tailstocks the same? and lastly, for parts that are interchangable, is it sacrilegious to paint it a different color than origional? Thanks for any help.

First, let me welcome you to this forum. It is always good to have someone else join us. I am pleased to see that you come loaded with questions. This group thrives on questions. The answers
(opinions) will sometimes differ but you will most always get a response.
Sacrilegious. NO. In my opinion, the only thing sacrilegious here would be to send any of it to the dump.
I'm going to defer to those who have your model machines to tell you what is interchangeable and what is not except to say that the SPT (bandsaw and jointer) and the headstocks are interchangeable. While the headstocks may be different, they are interchangeable as headstocks. Many of the internal parts are interchangeable but possibly not all; it would be necessary to see specific items (or to know more detail about the specific headstocks) to say for sure.
Knowing
serial numbers would probably allow much more specific answers.

The greenie fence should fit a 1983 Mark V 500, but not other models of the Mark V.
The tail stocks are 'interchangable'.
SPT's are mountable on either model.
If painting a non-oem color is 'sacrilegious', than many of us here are 'irreverent'.

Thanks for the input folks. For some reason the fence seems a little to deep to fit the 1983 machine, matbe it is me. Does anyone have pics of what blade guards I should be looking for my 1983 machine?
