Can anyone tell me if the thread size and pitch is the same for vertical and horizontal lock knobs pictured below? I keep missing customer service to get a part number. I plan on ordering 2 horizontal lock knobs from Shop Smith when I can reach them, but I want to drill/tap the hole as I have 2 extra knobs I could use in the meantime. I know the vertical lock knob is a 3/8" x 16.

I would 'guess' 3/8-16, but, they may not sell the knobs separately. Like the table posts with the double rack('not sold separately'). At least that has been the case with previous attempts.

Do let us know if either are now 'available', and the part numbers.

I do not believe there is enough metal on the inside to allow any tapping on the normal base arm. I would drill a hole in the middle through both sides of the base arm just below the base arm pin and just thread the outside hole, more metal to play with. Or use a knob/bolt and nut to secure the base arm. I had problems with the thin metal on the inside of the base arm bending and threads stripping for other types of modifications I was playing with.

Add a piece of say 1/4" aluminum to the inside to provide threads and strength. A small screw will hold it in position.

The knobs are $25.64 each ( part # 522813 ) and, per Linda, require an o-ring $4.92 each ( part # 522814 ).

$61 + tax and shipping. I may have to go another route. I'd love for it to look nice but...

We do know that purchase prices are high. We also know that many items in question are "sole source". We have reason to believe that when items are sole source, we are at the mercy of the sole source provider.

I think we might be experiencing the pains of "sole source pricing".

Example: One 12oz can of Shopsmith Gray spray paint. $11.54 plus shipping. About 80% higher than a similar can of Rustoleum Hammered Gray.

And there is the example of the price of knobs that was used to start this discussion.

Have you purchased an on/off switch lately?

I'm confused with the premise of the original post. Josh, are you trying to create your own double-tilt or were you missing parts?

I have finished creating my own, just have to prime and paint it. I have 2 extra lock knobs that I'm going to use in the meantime. I wanted the factory knobs, but I'll go another route now. I'm trying to give Shop Smith as business as I can afford to.
