Hi Folks,
I am new to forum, I just recently had to replace my 1979 Shopsmith Mk V with a Mk VII due to a fire in my shop. It has been a painful process replacing all my acquired tools as well as my dad's and grandfather's hand-me-downs.
I found the new Mk VII painful to lift into the vertical position so ordered and put on the lift kit. If you are having issues with your Shopsmith I highly suggest you try it!!!! My wife can now lift the unit with no problem. Wish I had one on my old machine.

No contest re the lift assist! Several here have it.





What 'burned' beyond refurbing in the Mark V?

The fire was so hot that the metal castings melted and what didn't were distorted. The jointer base cracked due to water hitting it during the attempt to putting out the fire. One drawer of my tool box melted all my pliers together. On the positive side I did find an old hand auger that was my grandfathers and with a new handle it will rise from the ashes.

I can guess that you had a good insurance company with a good policy, did you ?

Anyway, glad that you got a brand new Mark 7 and the lift assist which is in my future somewhere.

And pictures would be appreciated.
