Dust collection system pipe run

I am getting ready to move into my new shop, It's a small shop and I want to build a dust collection system. I have a DC 3300, ShopSmith, band saw, 20" scroll saw, compound miter saw, spindle sander and thickness plainer. I want to attach them to the DC3300. This is my question, do I use 4" or 3" pipe and step down to 2 1/2" or use a 2 1/2" run from the dust collector to each tool?

I think Nick Engler used 3" pipe when he did the sawdust session on it.

Nick did indeed use 3" pipe. The sawdust session shows detailed calculations needed and how to put together the different connections needed if using PVC for the ducting.
I've been thinking of building a system for my shop for several years but other things keep getting in the way.

So where does one get an adapter from 2-1/2" 'shop vac hose' to 3" PVC pipe?

At 13:48 in the session linked above. Note he uses all three DC3300 ports to maximize cfm.
