Northern IL where to get hardwood?

I've been out of the business of using much hardwood due to cost restraints. I get only a few pieces when I really have to and my brother finds me some scraps for free.... some stray pieces follow me home....

On my way back from the shopsmith demo in Rockford today I took the long way home so I could visit Kirkland IL. Why Kirkland? How about because that is where the Kirkland Sawmill is.

They have an open window to the saw mill so you can see them cutting up the logs. Friendly people and hands on help.

So I came home with some ($13 worth) Q-sawn sycamore for a project this summer. Actually a couple of projects if you want to count on some scrap for pens.

First time there but I can see that being my new go to place.

More comments or more places to shop welcome.

Ed,

I don't know how far this place would be but they have excellent hardwood available - all quartersawn (unfortunately that means expensive though).

We visited them several years ago on a field trip as part of a Shopsmith gathering in Dayton. If you call them they can tell you if they ship lumber to someone close to you. If so, that place would have other lumber as well.

I don't have a lot of experience, yet, usually I'm doing more home repair stuff.
I go to http://www.owlhardwood.com the lombard location is closest but I was told (long time ago) the DesPlains location is best

Don't know how far you are willing to travel but, Just north of Effingham, between Effingham and Neoga, is Heartland Hardwoods.
Good selection of walnut and oak. They chiefly make hardwood molding but will sell planks. Call before you head down.
