Evidently I misread my instructions for my old but brand new SS Jigsawl. It calls for 10 weight compressor oil and I somehow put in 30 weight compressor oil! I can easily pour it out but since it's never had oil in it and it only seeped a smidge, is it ok to run it with that?

I would advise not to. The 30 wt is heavier and will gum up the mech. 10 wt is designed to flow freely in mach.

I kind of thought that might be the case. Now to get it all out!!

Does the oil, when used in the jigsaw, actually flow anywhere. I thought it just sat in the reservoir where the air pump is.

Yes, other than a small "weep hole" it just sits there as far as I can see. I may be totally wrong but as far as I know it's just basically a "Oil Bath".

Thicker oil slows things down a bit. Not much. In cold weather it will slow things down a lot. If it is just a "bath" you could use linseed oil, olive oil, or other stuff from the grocery store to work. These would be used only in an emergency and then later replaced because they are too thin. Heavier viscosity only slows things on low rpm machines - not high rpm engines in autos. Unless you are in a cold climate where you use it during cold weather, don't worry about it. Remember, the manufacture publishes recommendations or requirements to protect themselves not what is best for you. As an example, SS's recommendation that you lube sheaves with a few drops of oil is to not have someone complain because everything got gummed up by saturating the sheaves. Recommendation is not optimum as you will learn on this forum.

My opinion which my wife will tell you is not worth. . .well, we don't go there. However, there a few thing I know more about than she does.

IIWM, I would drain out all the 30w oil and replace it with 10W or compressor oil. I do not think the small amount of heavier viscosity oil would be a problem.

Tis simply an oil bath and a crank shaft etc. The air bleed hole is to allow for atmospheric pressure variation.

I ya still be concerned, flush it out again after a few hours operation.


The air pump is in the upper cylinder with the return spring etc.

I have used transmission oil in mine for years with no ill effects. Biggest problem I have is forgetting to set tension after moving or making adjustments. Kinda tough on blades (read pretzel).

Get a small diameter hose and suction it out. There is room in the reservoir to put the hose, create suction and drain. No need to go trying to turn the thing on its side etc.
