As a housewarming present for my son I promised to make his something. He Googled and found a bookshelf he really liked. Here's what he picked out

I'm not done with this but I thought I'd post a couple pics anyway. I used 3/4" common pine from a BBS. I worked from the image above. Because the bookshelf was in use I was able to scale it easily and created a SketchUp plan. He's planning on painting it so all I have left is sanding, adding the back (1/4" pw) and final assembly. I decided to use counter-sunk screws and glue. I think for me to cut dovetails would have taken way too long and he's painting it. I changed the plan by loping off the top shelf in part because his 8'4" ceiling was simply too close to the finished height - it would look stupid to have a 95" bookshelf there.

A couple of final notes all the cuts were made with my SS. I often read how difficult it is to use the table saw on a SS or how it's the weakest part. The Wixey digital gauge sure was a blessing for this project.

I scratched my head on the design when I first saw the photo but after looking at the FHB photo of the finished project, I realized its not only a clever design but functionally quite useful for a bookshelf...you don't need bookends with it! Well done - definitely post pictures of the end result.

I like your shelf berry, nice work. I think you could sell as many of these as you could make. I like how books of various sizes are easily accommodated.

I like it! Our kids would have loved that back in the day.

What if any plans to you have for a back?

No criticism intended but do know if you have to have a flat bottom? When I looked at it I pictured the pieces all being the same and adding a tapered wedge on the vary bottom for it to sit on. I know that is not the plan....

The back is 1/4" pw. After I dry fit it, as seen in the first 2 pics, I layed it down on the pw and traced the outline. Then I cut the back panel to shape (slightly oversized) with a jig saw. In final assembly I'll pin/glue it to the case and then trim it flush with a router.

The bottom is flat. I'm no photographer so maybe it looks off. For the final pic or two I'll hold a plumb bob next to it and you see how plumb this stands. It's pretty stable too although I'll have my kid attach it to the wall once it's in place.

Finally finished the bookshelf project. 3 coats of General Finishes Polyacrylic satin.

Like it. Modern and youthful design and great execution. I'm sure son is happy and proud of it. Great job!
