Probably most of you have seen vids of the planing competitions in Japan. I just ran across this one and have to admit I was blown away by the "shavings" these guys make.

Impressive. Anyone have any idea what kind of wood that is being planed? Seems to me that getting a tearfree ribbon in the microinche thickness it would have to be very solid, dense material. Maybe they are using a plastic?
