510 needs help

I got a 510 today but is may just be a way to upgrade what I have already(I may end up moving my headstock to it to get a single 510 instead of current 500):confused:

The PO had done some maintenance of some kind a couple of years ago and when he put it back together, it does not operate correctly. I listened to it and it does fine at slow speed and when the speed control is cranked up a bit, it started slipping and basically disengaged the belt. I am guessing the lower sheave is not tightening as the control sheave spreads.

So it is all apart from the move from PO to new home. Will the headstock be easier to troubleshoot/fix sitting on bench or re-assembled?

I have to agree with your conclusion. Take the belt cover off and watch the floating sheave. You should be able to see a missing spring or a missing retaining ring or a stuck sheave.:D

On the bench for starters.

I tapped with rubber mallet, not sure if it has moved, but was able to get to oil hole and put in some oil.

The best thing for a stuck floating sheave is removal and a thorough cleaning and lubrication.

Those things can be real obstinate to get 'floating' again when stuck.

Beware the snakey sneakey spring that is waiting to pounce!!!:eek:

Looks like I need a new tool to remove/replace the retaining ring. Other than small, is there a better description I can give to the NAPA guy?

This definitely calls for reliable snap ring pliers. The pliers need to spread the ring. Some versions allow for both an opening and a squeezing motion. You will need the smallest pins available. A right(or slightly less) angle configuration works better for this. If possible get a 'set' that includes different size pins and angles. My universal model includes three size pins .036", .047", ,070", or 9,1.2, and 1.8 mm.

You do not want to 'lose' that ring because it is an 'inverted' ring that are difficult to find locally(there are several on SS stuff).

Do have a good way to control that sna . . spring as it's tension is relieved or added. i.e. Do be careful!!!!!

Extra hands are recommended on first attempt. If you can get the spring depressed out of the way and still have two hands available, use one hand to squeeze the pliers, and the second hand to ensure the ring does not fly fly away into the etherworld.


OHHHH!!! And be sure the ring is securely in the groove prior to reapplying spring pressure.

I got the snap ring off without loosing anything. Cleaned shaft with mineral spirits and wire brush. pulled shop rag, soaked with mineral spirits, back and forth in sheave opening.

I think I am ready to try reassemble. Any ideas? I am not sure how hard it will be to compress spring and slip snap ring on. If there is nothing else I need to do I'll give it a try.

Lightly oil the shaft to make it easier to slide the sheave back on.

I had not tried sliding the sheave back on the shaft. Oiled shaft and it went on smoothly. Moves easily.

I have not found a way to compress spring adequately. At suggestion of NAPA guy, going to try valve spring compressor in the morning (not in stock locally).
