Costom extension on lathe

Found this extension interesting
Shopsmith w/ planer, band saw,disc sander,drill press, jig saw, chisels, etc.
Shop Smith - $1400 (San Diego)
Custom extension on lathe, takes stock unit. 46 " long.(removable)

What the heck?!!! I can only guess that the owner is a mechanical engineer with access to a 3D CAD system and a really big 3D printer.
Alternative theories, anyone?

I don't think that's the result of an engineer in CAD or even a machinist, though it is well thought out and put together. I tried zooming in, it appears to just be square stock and a plate welded together, I would guess the work of a fabricator with the materials available around the shop. Basically the metal version of a good woodworker.
If it were drawn in CAD by an engineer I think you would see more braces and gussets, and the one brace you see in the pic would tie into the end of the bottom rail rather than being welded underneath, and a different clamping system.

That makes sense -- I like your theory much better than mine!
