Oiling spindle clarification

Before oiling, turn off and unplug your machine.
Rotate the speed dial up to "Rout-Shape" range.

Is this a mistake or am I supposed to move the speed dial with the machine off?
Also, for the tubes I went with RIG grease that I use on my firearms for long term storage and to protect the surface areas. It is sort of a miz of an oil and a wax. Anyone else tried it?

I suspect it's ok to turn the dial from low to high with the power off because the grove is getting wider and no stess is involved. If you go from high to low I suspect the shive is trying to squeeze the belt so it can ride higher in the grove which requires lots of torque. I could be wrong.

Reverse numbers 1 and 2.

1/2, 2/1 it does not matter. Rotating the speed dial 'up' with pulleys not rotating will not cause damage(Fred is correct), but may cause the motor belt to jam later. Reversing 1/2 is a safer sequence.
Step 7 do as it says. Adjusting the speed control 'down' requires the pulleys to be turning.
Now the procedure is somewhat incomplete for earlier models. Very early mark 5's did not have the oil holes in the control sheave nor the floating sheave.
Also the motor is never oiled - only the floating sheave attached to the motor shaft.
More recent versions do not have the plug button on the belt cover.
The 'tip' is somewhat 'dated' so take that into account.
