Motor help for another member!

I received a PM from forum member greg1m53 regarding his motor. I figured it best to put any solutions in view of the community in case it helps anyone else. Anyone have any ideas? He made a video of the motor issue. It starts but doesn't stay running and sounds like Chewbacca when winding down. Here is a link to the video: http://youtu.be/ENrO4lYTJQI. EDIT: I misunderstood the first PM, the motor does run...it's just noisy.

It runs quite smooth and quiet when up to speed and takes quite a while to slow down the bearings feel smooth with out any free play.

It could just be the sheaves making noise it runs well does not get warm
the bearings are tight, it spins nicely.

Anyone have any ideas? I think the noise is related to the sheave alignment because it's fairly quiet at speed. It's probably the same noise as the motor comes to a halt.

Greg: Does it shut off after the same amount of time each time or is it random?

I turned it off at the end of the video, but makes the same noise shutting down every time

I want to make sure I understand the problem completely.

Aside from the noises the motor DOES shut off by itself without you turning it off?

The noise is the same whether it shuts itself off or if you shut it off?

I shut the motor off myself, the noise I am concerned about is when it shuts down
It does not shut off on its own, or over heat, I have to turn it on and off as it should be

Oooh ok!


First thing I would check is to make sure the fan sheave has a small space between the end casing and the bottom of the sheave. There is a small shoulder on the bottom of the motor shaft. The sheave should sit all the way down on that BUT above the casing. Sometimes this shoulder can get screwed up.

Start by removing the sheaves see post #3 here


Check the shoulder, it should like like this:

Check the shoulder, key and key way, and bottom of the fan sheave. If all look ok, run the motor without the sheaves (don't leave the key in the shaft to become a projectile). If the noise is gone you know it's not in the motor but in the sheaves. If the noise is still there, stop and let us know as that will take us in a different direction.

If the noise is gone without the sheaves, reinstall only the fan sheave and run the motor. If the noise is still gone, reinstall all as shown here

To be clear, you mean spacer (part 124), then key, then fan sheave. The fan sheave should be against the spacer. Sometimes these spacers get a little beat up or even lost which affects the postioning of the fan sleeve.

Whatever is 'rubbing' is doing so both at speed up(starting) and coast. down(stopping). The startup time is much shorter so it is not as noticeable then. The 'rubbing' seems to be somewhat speed dependent.

A pix of the rubbing motor with the sheaves removed should prove helpful. If not so, the bearings are suspect.

I concur the logical thing to do is to remove the potential culprits(sheaves and spacer) and replace them until the rubbing reoccurs(assuming removal also eliminated the rub.

I think the bearings(dry?) are the most likely culprit, but they are not the only possible one(s).

That is exactly it, thanks for the rewording...I'll put into the guide later! The spacer and fan sheave should look like this:

The spacer should be pressing against the bearing inner race on the inner end and the fan sheave on the outer end. The end casting hole is very close to the od of the spacer. Any bearing side play could be causing the spacer to rub inside that hole.
