I received this PM and don't have a clue as to what he is saying. I left a reply but had no response. What is he saying?

I guess the welfare era has simply ruined the "respect your elders" bit. The fact that someone who is 75 could make it there without having worked a day in their life makes it a little hard to view the age as a badge of wisdom. Maybe in another time.

Rather than upload the file and embed a link to the copy now on the server, he embeded a link to the file located on his computer.

Right click on a picture file on your computer, go to Open With... and Internet Explorer (or whatever web browser you use). You'll see something similar to his link in your address bar.

How he did it in a PM I'm not sure, but addresses all work basically the same whether they are on your desktop, a server, or the internet. Problem only occurs when your wires aren't plugged into the location.

The very first part of a link tells the computer where to look (and what protocol to use) for the listed resource. Notice the link in the original post starts with "file:///". That tells your computer to use its own file management for the file. The subsequent "C:/Users/db/AppData/Local/Temp/msoclip1/01/" tells your computer the file is located on your "C:/" hard drive, then defines a hierarchy of subfolders to look in. Followed by the last part, "clip_image001.gif" which is the actual name of the file. If you happen to have a file with that exact name, in a location exactly matching "C:/Users/db/AppData/Local/Temp/msoclip1/01/" on your local computer, then you will see that file. Since the person who posts a link like that generally does have that file in that location on their local hard drive, it works for them. But it won't work for anybody else (again, unless they happen to have that same file in the same location).

I would suggest that as it was a private message, it should stay that way, private not public. Send the person a PM asking for clarification or just forget about it.

You can suggest anything. While he sent a PM that does not require me to keep it private]Personal and Confidential[/I]. Once it is in your possession you can do anything you want with it. There is no legal, ethical or moral obligation to keep anything private unless you agreed to do so. I did reply to the sender and asked what it meant. No response. Thus, I hoped someone here would have some insight.

So what did it say?

In your reply did you mention your lack of understanding was partially due to having a headache? Or is that response reserved only for your wife when she offers you something.

Now I get it and thank you for the clarification. The best defense is an offense, unless it is offensive or perhaps borderline by making unsubstantiated assumptions and treating them as if they were correct. Headache? Haven't had one in 40 years. Wife offering something. Hasn't happened in 40 years. Both assumptions are wrong. May I Suggest (of course I can) that you read Stephen Covey's chapter in The 7 Habits - Seek First to Understand and then Be Understood. It has kept me out of a lot of trouble by assuming and jumping to conclusions.

Since you had no Emoticon which indicated anything other than straight rhetoric, I assume there was none; I've included one - or more to ensure you that this is not an attack but a simple rebuttal. :(
