Explain that to me. Are these on backorder from SS? With the usual end of auction bidding this will almost certainly hit within a few dozen dollars of retail NIB. I stopped bidding a long time ago even though I was very interested.

I never pay much attention to the seller's starting price. The one guy who seems to consistently fetch the highest prices on Shopsmith items almost always starts bidding at $0.99. It gets the bidding frenzy going.
Click on "completed listings" to see what stuff really sells for. You will see that most speed reducers have been selling for around $200. I myself was lucky enough to land a nice one for $150, when I chanced across a brand-new listing and snapped it up at a low buy-it-now price. And I had missed a $125 buy-it-now unit just a few days earlier. A couple of reducers did indeed bring near list price, with the bidding starting at $200 in both cases. Go figure.
The best time to buy on eBay is when there are several units for sale at the same time. I managed to score a clean SS belt sander for $100, when there were six or eight listed the same week.
Also, I never bid until just before the end of the auction -- it only serves to drive up the price. I use eSnipe.com to place last-second bids for me automatically. Their fee is either 0.5% or 1%, I forget which, and that only applies to winning bids. Works great. Figure out what is the most that you are willing to pay, ignore the other bidders, and let eSnipe do the timing work. I usually get outbid, which is fine with me. But when I do win, it's often at a price much less than my maximum bid.

The last 6 that sold on eBay sold for $220 - $280 and before that $200 was the average. The one you linked is overpriced as it appears to be in horrible condition.
Shipped from shopsmith they are $321.
I picked up a like-new reducer from Craigslist for $120 that was missing the mounting bracket and 5 spline drive hub. I spent another $30 on the bracket from shopsmith and used it to refinish my SS tubes. I just sold it via Craigslist for $225 (with multiple offers at that price) and didn't have to pay eBay any fees.

I just picked up a like new one on Craigslist from the Sacramento area. It was listed by itself for $125 with the manual. It's on it's way to Georgia for $150 including shipping.
One thing I have found with Shopsmith stuff.....
seek and ye shall find.
Another "find" I snagged is a speed increaser. It also was on Craigslist in North Carolina along with a 510 and bandsaw.
I convinced the seller to let the increaser go separately. The increaser had never been used!
So, I got a speed increaser, increaser fence, and guard for $250 w/shipping. It arrives at my doorstep tomorrow.
Only problem with that score, is I'll would have to upgrade to a 510 in order to use the fence. I'm sure there's a workaround somewhere there.

SS does have the speed reducer as a special every once in a while - I don't remember the price when that happens but I remember at the time it was not very far off from what folks were paying for used ones on E-Bay. It never ceases to amaze me how much some folks will pay for some stuff on E-Bay. I see the same with strip sanders - they tend to sell for pretty close to the price of a new one, and usually are missing a couple of the platens.

Ya it's crazy. I would never buy used unless it's at least half off and I really prefer to support Shopsmith directly.
