Introduction and future restoration advice

Hi all!

swamprb is my handle here, but I'd like to introduce myself formally- Brian from Bothell, WA.

Longtime MarkV 510 owner, but today on craigslist I found a MarkV, Scroll Saw and Power Station listed for $100. I figured they were asking that for each piece, as they were listed for $400 in their Garage Sale ad. They wanted $100 for everything, I offered $80 and they helped load it all up in the SUV!

The MarkV definitely has some issues with the Speed Dial, it feels like it is stripped, it does run, and the logo cover access is held on with duct tape. Those are the most obvious besides minimal surface rust and aluminum oxidation.

The Power Station is missing the safety key on the power switch so I haven't checked its operation and other than some rusting on the table it looks pretty clean. I searched around the SS site for a replacement key and only came up with a Service Bulletin for a Switch Update.

I will be ordering a PS Instruction Manual and hopefully getting this switch replaced ASAP, so if anyone has any advice for a newbie to the site on my latest finds I'd surely appreciate any help!

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum, Brian, and congratulations on an amazing deal!

Here's a link to a Forum thread with some options for replacing the PS switch: https://forum.shopsmith.com/viewtopic.php?t=12458

I've never had to tear into the speed dial on my SS, but there are some first-class experts here that can advise on that.

I purchased my SS last month and have done a god bit of the restoration work already. Which is including tearing down the entire unit and cleaning and refinishing everything, down to every bolt and screw. Everything I've needed to know I have found through this forum. The search function is definitely your friend, and though I have yet to meet anyone on this forum personally, there are a lot of good people on here.

Welcome to the group. Sounds like a heck of a find.

I bought a stand mounted Scroll Saw recently and thought $125 was pretty good price. One note, after several minutes of use the O-Ring drive belt failed...old and brittle from sitting a long time. Changing it is not as straight forward as one would hope:( :( See. Not too hard, but more complex that one would guess.

Model 510 that I bought @ 1994. It was 9 months new when I got it, with the Bandsaw, Jointer, and a ton of accessories. It even came with a Shopsmith class certificate at Wood Craft in Seattle that I attended. Bought replacement Bandsaw blades there, and went back in March to buy more and was surprised that they no longer sold Shopsmith, which led me here.

I like your find even more:D

You do not have the O-Ring drive belt issue to worry about. I think/wonder if the belt change complexity caused them to drop the stand-alone version that I have.

Until you can find a replacement, the switch safety key on your 510 should work fine on your Power Station.

Tried the key from the 510 and it does not fit the Power Station.

As you have 'discovered', they are different.

I hope SS still has some, since I need one for my latest 'new' PS.

Fortunately there are other 'sources' for a replacement switch.
