The belt system reminds me of the Corvair ("Unsafe at any speed").

My brother used to own a Corvair in the late 60's, but I don't remember a belt sys on that vehicle that crazy. He drove that thing a lot of miles, kept it in good condition. The only real problem with that car, other than high maintenance, was it's worst enemy.....Ralph Nader.

Yea, how would you make belt covers for that thing?

The picture brings back many memories.
Sometime around 1953 my father took me to a Shopsmith demo. The demonstrator turned a wineglass style cup and handed it to me after the demo. I was hooked I wanted a wood lathe. When I was about 10 my father brought one home like the machine listed on CL, . I used that machine until the bushings were worn to the point it wouldn't hold a work piece.
Mine had a saw with it If I remember correctly it was a 7in blade with no blade guard no fence or cross cut guide. I wasn't allowed to use the saw. After my brother told my father that I had set up the saw all the saw parts disappeared.
I just remembered I received a set of craftsman lathe tools for my birthday. I still have that set.

For educational reasons here is a sample of the corvair engine belt, well at least the top half of it.

What model is that Corvair, Ed?

Had a friend with a '62 Spyder model. It came
stock with a generator, not the alternator that
one has. (Well, his didn't start out as a Spyder,
but the VIN numbers were run concurrently
between the Spyder, and the base models,
so we "fudged" it.

The Spyder also had one of the first turbochargers
on a production American car.

Oh, Ralph Nader is an *******! (No, I didn't use a
swear word, just some (*)s.)
