I recently rebooted my system and this afternoon everything seemed to be working OK. So I downloaded the Windows updates fro Microsoft and now when I get on this website in the main forum section some words such as "woodworking" are highlighted in blue. When the cursor stops on these words an ad appears for something like a Jacuzzi or some others. I launched the site from the bookmarks as well as direct access by typing in the address and I get the same thing. I eliminated the bookmarks for this site and tried again and got the same thing. Have I been hacked or has this site been hijacked?

Ok I apologize. Don't know how this crap happens but it seems to be limited to IE. After loading the updates it started but it does not happen when I switched to Google Chrome. It not only happened on this site but also the American Association of Woodturners as well. Highlighted words pulled up ads.

PS Currently running a virus scan but I don't think that it will do any good. Seem like the bug got in through Microsoft when the updates were installing. This was the first site I tried after the updates. This has been a disastrous week for computer woes.

PPS The virus scan did show a threat but not this one. Think I am about to reboot again.

Do you have any toolbars installed in IE? Maybe a Bing or Google or Yahoo toolbar or something like that? That is one cause of this behavior.

I think that is a feature you can turn off and on in Internet Explorer. Do a search on google for highlited words and ads

Bill; Two different ideas.
1. Users who are not logged to this site in will see those ads. Logout and login again.
2. MS is selling advertising via IE.

It has nothing to do with this site. It is a web browser add-on or toolbar. Start disabling those and you'll find the culprit.

Thanks for the advice guys. I did find that I had two versions of IE on this computer after the Hard drive was rebooted. One was for Windows 7 64 bit and the other was for other versions of Windows that were 32 but. My system is 64 bit so I started running the 64 bit version and all now seems OK. Kind of funny how this stuff gets dumped on people without permission or knowledge. Thanks for the help All.

That is one of my hot buttons with Microsoft.

Seems strange happenings occur after 'updates'.

What pray tell does booting a hard drive mean?

I unnerstan boot strapping a computer, but a disk drive?;)

I don't really notice those types of things being installed by Microsoft. I have noticed those things already being on the computer, like the Yahoo Toolbar and what not, and then when you update to the version the toolbar likes it becomes functional. Or its been installed but disabled, and somehow becomes enabled when you update IE.

Bottom line, most of that garbage is the result of "free" software you downloaded. Heathicus is right, disable the addons and toolbars until you find the one doing that.
