I need a new rubber sleeve for drum sander.

I removed an old sanding sleeve from my sanding drum and tried to put a new one on. The drum came with a 1955 Mark V (fairly recent purchase) and this is the first time I've changed the paper. The new sleeve wouldn't stay on, and I can't tighten it any further. It seems as though the rubber may have sat for years and is compressed and stiff. There is nothing else wrong with the drum. I called Shopsmith and asked about buying a new rubber sleeve, but was told they don't sell them separately I would have to buy a whole new drum. The drum is fine, I'd hate to toss it because the sleeve is no good. I just need to find a replacement sleeve; any ideas?

I recently brought 2 of the lower rubber sleeves for the 6X48 belt sander from Shopsmith. I just checked that there was no part numbers on the packages. Please talk to Linda as she has always been able to find for me whatever part I needed even when it has never been listed in the catalog. An outstanding customer service person to deal with. She is very Shopsmith knowledgeable to where she has recommend a different solution/part that did function/work for what I was looking for. A real super lady.
I have one of the new sleeves mounted on the later model flat drive drum with new bearings which is available if you are unable to get a new sleeve from Shopsmith. I also have a reconditioned idler drum available along with other belt sander parts.

Bill,
Thanks for the info, I'll try calling her. The rubber sleeve that I need is for the 2 1/4" drum sander, not the belt sander. So far my belt sander is working well. Thanks again for the info.
