Yep - Box (urn) of Box Elder (soft maple) for the Elder (Dad's ashes) - my little boy;s cub scout leader had a large Box Elder taken down last year, and although I was late to the party, I did manage to score a piece about 18" diameter, and 18" long. I took it to the TAW Turn and Learn meeting (TN Assoc. of Woodturners), and promptly was told it was too punky. But after sawing it a bit I did manage to find an area that was relatively solid, and big enough to make a deep vessel on a Delta Lathe. I roughed it out on that lathe and then tried to true after it dried on the Shopsmith, then finished the next month on a smaller Delta Mini-lathe. The knob on the lid is actually a piece of pearwood I dyed with Fieblings Black Leather Dye. All is polished with Mylands Friction Polish while still on the lathe, Dad would be proud of me. He was always so proud of what I've learned over the years, and he is my inspirational guide through the journey.

BTW: The Urn (Box) measures 8" tall without the lid, and 4.7" diameter.

Thanks.

BTW: My 2 sisters and I have split the ashes in thirds, so the volume is hopefully large enough. I still have to finish the inside and seal it.
