I recently bought my 1st Mark V 500 (1960 Model I think). I am in the process of refurbishing it. There is some hardware on the carriage & table that doesn't seem to serve any purpose (see pictures). The set screw on the carriage isn't shown on the exploded parts view at the Shopsmith site. Thought one of you Shopsmith Guru's might know. This site has been an indispensible source of help for my project.

I think the carriage bolt is to center the table saw blade in the insert. Used as a quick reference point. Later models have a 3/8 inch hard plastic ring on the back waytube to set this distance.

The two bolts in the underside of the table are 90° stops. Set the table to 90° like in the drill press mode. Adjust these bolts so that they contact the bosses on the legs as a quick reference when changing modes.

Don't know answer to first photo. Ditto to Jim in Bakersfield's assessment of the second one.

I believe Jim is correct. It was designed as a stop for aligning the carriage to the headstock. Replaced by the black plastic ring on the way tube for the 505 plus carriage since many a carriage wound up cracked in that very spot from the headstock and carriage colliding too hard (Like when switching to drill press mode and the headstock is not locked).

Both questions have been answered correctly.
This is a model 10 version but it is functionally(not sure re size) the same for Greenies and(not sure) early(Gilmer) Goldies.

One can be easily made from a carriage bolt(cut head off and add slot).


BTW You have a 1950's/early 60's Mark 5.
