If you attempt to download a version of Sketchup now will will get a trial version of Sketchup 2013. You now longer have the option of downloading a previous version; at least I did not.
At the beginning of the installation, there was a statement that what was being downloaded would expire (at a specific point in the future) but that I would then have the option to continue to use a free version or purchase the new 2013 version.
I had no choice because I am now using a computer that did not have Sketchup - it was this or no Sketchup at all.
So far, it doesn't seem to be all that different and I have not discovered any differences except appearance. The icons are all similar but yet different - a change that I think was unnecessary.
Yes, I am an old geyser and I don't like change - especially change for which I see NO NEED.

old "geyser"?
Hm, there's a quaint little town in the woods above San Francisco called "Geyserville" . I always thought it was named after the hot springs and all in the area, but maybe...

seems like just sales pitch in 2013

On Dave Richards advice I went to SketchUp 2013. I have used it considerably of late and can't see any difference than with previous 8.
Oh, yes: now instead of going right to a file you are given options to go to Pro, tutorials, and what not and have to click again to get to the sketch screen file. Marketing mostly I guess.
I did have a very large file once (1.6 MB) and it seemed to be a bit unstable, suddenly closing for no known reason, fortunately as I was exiting SketchUp, not while actively working a file.

I tried the new one and it seemed to corrupt old files and was difficult to decide where I wanted to store files. I ended up deleting it and spent a week trying to get files back to the old version 8.
Not happy with how the new owners of the software are trying so hard to get me to switch. Maybe it's the obstinate old fart in me, but I won't switch if I don't have to. Such as all the add-ins and such ONLY work with the new version.
Again, just my 2 cents.

I had it loaded and it seemed to be working but then it burped and froze. I subsequently lost access to the computer.
Right now, my outllook is not good.

Isn't sketchup a Google program? Why would you consider downloading it from a website other than Google and be surprised if you got a virus?
I told my grandson to download Microsoft security essentials. He did but he downloaded it from a site other than Microsoft and bought the farm. Had to format the harddrive and start over. Again he went to a no name site to download something he wanted (found on a search for the program) and bought the farm again.
I ONLY download from the product owners site. If I can't get what I want from there I do without.
You want some real interesting viruses go to one of these No name video movie sites and try to see a movie that is copywritten for free. Man oh man they have code that will tank your system so deep you may not be able to even format the harddrive from anything but a standalone harddrive formatter.
If it is free get it from the product owner or be prepared to pay dearly. If the product owner charges and you found a place that offers it free, be prepared to format your hard drive.

I have the newest release that I know about, maybe from like Aug. or so. They labeled it 2013 but if you do the "About" under help it is listed as V8.0.16846.
It is no longer a Google offering, that changed sometime last year and now it is offered by Trimble Navigation Limited.
There are a few changes from in this version from my previous version but not many as far as the work I do. It does have a few "pro" features which expire after so many hours.... They want to hook you then get the $$$. I didn't want to get hooked so I never tried the "pro" stuff. No way I have the money to buy a copy but it nice they have a working free version.
I have seen some strange behavior like I put dimension on one side of an object and by magic they flip to the other side of the object???? More then likely something I've done wrong but I can't seem to fix it. When I open the object to edit it the dimensions jump back to the other side where I want them, close the object and they flip????
So that is my story and I'm sticking with it.
