So along with a bunch of other stuff I had going on I had the time to make up this.

Pen Blank square to octagonal jig.

A better mousetrap, fashioned with a rat-tail file ?

My guess is the device is a hold down jig that will fit onto the miter guage. It will hold rounded as well as pieces with squared edges.

It's purpose? Got me! Maybe you can make dowels using the bandsaw or circular saw.

Anyway - nice thought to use a mouse trap as a hold down.

I must say the video looks like my fingers are a lot closer to the blade then they really are. Looks scary.

I see we had some good guesses, and of course one was right on the money.

I didn't count but I must have about 20 pens worth of wood ready to be made into more pens. I don't know if I have that many pen parts..... I like to do them in batches of at least a dozen to make it worth while.

I normally turn them from square but I had this spare mouse trap laying around so I figured I'd see how this jig would work and then decide if this octave step is worth doing.

Today was pen turning day in the shop.

I had a set of six kits and had 4 wood pens worth of "mousetrap" cut blanks and 2 sets square cut blanks all with tubes in them and ready to turn.

I'd say it was marginally faster with the more round versions of the blanks, that would include the cut time at the bandsaw and then the turning.

If you are having problems with catching then you will notice it more then if you normally don't.

I still have pile of blanks so the next time I get the bandsaw out I will cut the rest of them to octagons. Maybe not worth it if you are only going to do a couple of pens at a time.

It was fun making the jig and it sure didn't take long. Fun zipping the corners off as well.
