Rust prevention

A couple of weeks ago there was a great discussion on rust prevention and etc. Well last month was my birthday and Woodcraft gives you a 10 percent off purchase to celebrate. I was in Woodcraft and noticed a product call Tabletop Rust Remover and Lubicant by Empire. I had remembered reading an article in one of the magazines touting how excellent this product is, so I bought it.

I was using my bandsaw a couple of weeks ago and decided to really clean up the table (old cast iron). I used the product and it worked super. The cast iron top ended up looking brand new. I then coated the top with a thin layer of the product as instructed and buffed it up and put the saw away.

Yesterday I need to use the saw and I got it back down. To my horror on the table was circular rust spot. I didn't have anything else out so the ring had to be from where I set the product itself. At this point the mark was little more than just that a mark and I was able to wipe it off and the top is none the worse for wear. However before I put Bandsaw away this time I gave it a coat of Johnson Paste wax that I have been using since 84 with never a problem.

On a side note I also used my jointer and I hadn't used in about 6 months. The last time I used it I Johnson Waxed it and put it away and it was totally rust free. I'm totally sold on Johnson paste wax to preserve my tables, even after six months of exposure to Florida humidity and salt air the jointer surface looked just as it did when I but it away.

That said I must say if you really want to clean up your cast iron (to polished smooth and shine) I would use the Empire product but i would follow that with a good waxing of Johnson Paste wax.
