that's why i video'd it - that was try about 19, I figured I was close

You were playing with fire by rotating back and forth.
By creating a slight curve of decreasing radius at the end, the spring can be made to self reseat into the 'keyhole'.
Shouldn't take 20 tries.
Actually yer video will help folks in the future reattach the spring.
I also like to create a 'hump' at the 'keyhole' so the spring grips the shaft under the pin and is less likely to become loose. The spring at the large end of the keyhole must be tight against the shaft to self engage. The hump helps create that.

When I was rebuilding my '85 headstock when I first got it I noticed the quill return seemed a little "wonky", so I took it apart. I had no idea what I was in for. The assembly had been taken apart sometime before and the key hole in the spring was all warped and chewed up; I flattened back out and it's almost like new (almost). When I reassembled it the head of the key screw sheared off. Luckily there was enough of the shaft left exposed out of the quill feed to extract it with vise grips and I re-tapped the hole and had another screw to fit it. It only took a couple tries to re-assemble it and then cross my fingers when I re-tensioned the spring once the headstock was re-assembled.
