quilt rack is finished

The Sara-style quilt rack that is made for a 'quilting' friend is finally finished. Dyed with Lockwood water dye Light Golden Oak (her choice) and four coats of clear satin spray polyurethane.
Designed on SketchUp and built on the ShopSmith - except for using my Rigid oscillating sander on the templates and finish sanding the two legs taped together. Even used SS in the under table mode to rout the legs to final shape of the template. The leg segments are doweled and pegged on the insides of the legs.

I made a template on ½ BB Ply by blowing up the SketchUp files to approximately true size. Cut them and taped together to get the full-size leg.

After the leg and stretcher templates were made and QS white oak boards were sized, I laid out the leg template on them to get the angles. Since my SS jointer is good for 4 inches, I had to cut segments of the legs. To get the mating angles to match perfectly, I cut both pieces at the same time.

The tenons cutting was the easiest part of the job.

And finally, since the bottom stretchers could not be attached with pre-cut dowel holes (I just could not figure out the angles on curved pieces!), I bored both the stretcher and the leg at the same time. The dowel shows but only on the bottom of the stretcher where only the mice will normally see them. But I don't think they will mind.

This was very challenging but satisfying when done. But I will NOT do this again until I find someone around here with a 6 inch jointer - or until I figure out (or find) a design for a jointer sled for the planer.
