Hi All, I just had a Shopsmith Mark V given to me by a good friend, and I am now in the process of restoring it. I was wondering if anyone could identify the round silver object in the attached picture. It looks like a cover plate for something, but I don't know what. Just thought someone would know off hand what it is.

That would appear to be an 'alteration'.

Need to see the other side(inside mount etc.) to garner additional clues.

Is it a magnet?

It may be merely a hole plug. Reason for 'extra' hole(s) unknown(fer the present moment).

It looks like a hole plug to me, but I haven't had the head apart yet to look at it more closely.

The machine was made in 1960 according to the serial number. Right now I am working on the lower parts of the SS, but I will try to take the head apart this weekend to get a better look. I have never seen a SS with a plug in this location. Thought it might be from an upgrade or repair.

My guess, without seeing what is underneath, is that it is a magnetic put there to provide a holding place for the allen wrench.

PS Scratch that. The headstock casting is not magnetic.

It appears to have a small hole just above the 'plug'.

My first guess would be a hole was drilled to attach something for attaching a holder for the allen wrench(a.k.a. SStool kit) or the drill chuck key.

A second guess would be a hole for a reversing switch, but I am not sure there is room enough inside for one.

A remote guess would be to gain access to something inside, but other than the main shaft/bearing mount?????


The hole shape/count may help this 'investigation'.

Thanks! The machine really runs nice. I got the scroll saw with it, and cleaned it up well enough to make some test cuts. I was impressed! It is in need of a few accessories. Since there is paint splattered all over it, I thought it could use a face lift. So I am sanding it down to repaint. I have the lower tubes done already, and got one of the legs about 80% prepped last night. It's kind of cool to have a machine that is the same age as me.

This is my second one, btw. I used to have a 10-E, but sold it many moons ago. The going rate around here for a Mark V is around 300 - 600$. There will be a second unit in my future, pending approval from the C.F.O. of course... :-)

I be guessing 'Jig' saw, not 'Scroll' saw.

What's the difference? It uses the same blades that I use on my scroll saw and works the same, so I just assumed...

I guess this makes it a jigsaw, cause this is what it is...
