I thought some of you who don't get Lee Valley tool special emails might be interested in the Digital Marking Gauge they have placed on sale for $29.50.

I think this is a new product they developed, something Lee Valley does often - develop new innovative tools. In any event, I have digital calipers, and lots of manual marking gauges, but this is a first that I have seen something like this.
I know they are many frivolous tools on the market today, but this seemed like a chore-saver from setting a marking gauge using a ruler or calipers. I ordered one.

Thanks for the heads up Wm. I really like Lee valley but, I think I'll pass on this one. Maybe, if it came with a laser.........

My pizza cutter, used along with an adjustable square, does a fine job of marking the line.
The last thing I need in my life is a digitally controlled marking gauge.

Looks like this digital device isn't too impressive.
My first thought is the knife (wheel) is probably more inaccurate than the measuring part.
What would we do if, when marking a line along the grain, the knife got caught in fiber (vessel) and shifted 0.002"? OMG:eek: Could we recover?

Yep, and I've heard there were people, called Luddites, who thought the telephone was the work of the devil. Maybe it was the industrial revolution.

I saw that and all I could think of trying to shift it back and forth to get it set within a thousandth. I think it could get frustrating trying to set the thing.

Ya I need that like another ailment.
That said, it makes sense to me. After all I have used a digital caliper as a compass! I do not have difficulty setting the calipers to within a couple of thousandths. One could use the tail(depth measuring thingy) as a 'setter'.
Maybe some day when I have an extra score and a half $.

Ok, I'll bite. How does one use a digital caliper as a compass, pray tell?

The 'inside' measuring fingers have sharp points(when new). A 'typical' compass(not the north pointing kind) has two points. One becomes a pivot, the other becomes a 'scribe'.
Get yer noggin outta de box!:D
