Which would you buy and why?
I'm toying with which Nova chuck to purchase. This one fits my pocket book well but I don't know about its adaptability on the SS and how durable it is and how well it works.
This one on eBay - http://www.ebay.com/itm/SHOPSMITH-MARK- ... 5195c045c4
and the one Shopsmith sells - http://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/catalog/nova_g3.htm
Really interested in experience with either of them. Looking forward to your posts. Thank for you input.

I have neither.
So from a new owner perspective, the SS one gets my vote.
Extra jaws.
Geared adjustment of jaws rather that tomy bars.
SS adapter is more likely to be correct(at last).
P.S. Also the worm screw.

I cannot speak to the Nova, but I would buy this chuck with this adapter before I would buy the Ebay chuck. I do have experience with the Barracuda and liked it. I would still have it if I hadn't lucked into 3 Oneway Stronghold chucks.swampgator wrote:I'm toying with which Nova chuck to purchase. I also believe that the ebay chuck is an independent adjusting chuck (NOT self centering like a wood workers scroll chuck) These can be a pain to center items.
I have the Barracuda II from PSI. It's a good chuck but has gone up in price. If I were to do over again I would get the Nova from SS. It takes out all the guess work.

Is there an "immediate" need or just wanting to get something so you can play with the lathe? If you can wait, I presume that Shopsmith will have the G3 on sale by February (possibly sooner). Last time (June) the sale price was $149 plus S&H (about $20 for me), then they took orders and wait time was a few weeks. That falls within the EBay price of the no-name you linked but I do not know when the G3 will be back on sale.
As Terry pointed out, self adjusting are IMHO, worth their price just because they save lots of aggravation.
Just my 2 cents.
Be well,
Ben

I would disagree, looks like a scroll chuck that adjusts with 'tommy' bars like the barracuda I linked. The Ebay chuck kinda looks a lot like this one from Grizzly (Grizzly sells it for $60).terrydowning wrote:I also believe that the ebay chuck is an independent adjusting chuck (NOT self centering like a wood workers scroll chuck) These can be a pain to center items.

Thank you
Wow! What an overwhelming group of responses so quickly. Thank all of you for posting your experience.
Ben, I think that the Shopsmith site did display the Nova G3 which was in the sales catalogue. That's what caused me to look at it. But, if they put it on sale in the winter, I may purchase it then as right now is a bit tight. Getting tired of eating beans and "taters".
I greatly like the idea that something made especially made for the Shopsmith and takes out the frustration of centering sounds like the way to go. However, I also like the adapter for the Barracuda which I may just go ahead and get anyway so I can use other faceplates and such. I like the idea of being able to buy from someone else an item that I think may work for me. So, the adapter is on the wish list and the Nova G3 is on the wish list from Shopsmith.
Thanks, again, for all the input. Made my decision and then when I have more experience, will be back for more input.

Rob, did you look at the picture, versus the description? Description says un-threaded, but the pics show threads. That is a "hmmm" moment for me.SDSSmith wrote:I would disagree, looks like a scroll chuck that adjusts with 'tommy' bars like the barracuda I linked. Oh, I'd disagree, too. But those "tommy bars" don't look like they'd be as precise as the real tightening tools, like the Nova chuck does.
