PowerPro DIY snag

I'm almost finished installing the PowerPro upgrade, but am having in little trouble mounting the new motor in the headstock casting: it won't push in quite far enough. As best I can tell, the issue is the heavy rubber strain relief on the bundle of blue wires on the motor. It's fairly stiff, and runs directly into the headstock lock screw. I think I've managed to push the wire bundle down below the headstock lock screw, but that bundle of wires still seems to be stiff enough right there that it's preventing pushing the motor all the way into the casting. I hesitate to cut off the strain relief, but I can't figure out how to get the motor in otherwise. Has anyone else run into this? If so, how did you resolve it?
In the pictures in the instructions and on the DVD, that bundle of wires seems to have a much more flexible cover on it, so they fold down more. I'm wondering if there were other issues that prompted them to use this heavier-duty strain relief.
