Poison Ivy "Cure"

Poison ivy loves me and I've never found anything that I consider to be effective...UNTIL RECENTLY.

My usual course is about 2.5 weeks start to finish. I get exposed but have no symptoms for 2 - 3 days. Day 3 to Day 14 is a worsening of symptoms and no real relief. Day 15 to Day 18, the itch stops and the rash starts to subside.

Urushiol from the plant binds on a molecular level to the cells and no amount of washing will unbind it.

A salesman for mean green fell into a large patch of poison ivy while on the road and washed it off with Mean Green Power Hand Scrub. It worked so well that he took the same active ingredients and created Zanfel.

Now when I read about it, I was very skeptical. I've tried everything under the sun (shots, oatmeal, creams, clucking like a chicken... You name it) but nothing actually treated the cause. Everything was simply symptom control while waiting on the body to destroy every cell bound with urushiol. I can say without a doubt that zanfel works as described. The itch goes away almost immedietely and stays gone. I have yet to try it BEFORE a rash breaks out but I'm sure it would prevent a rash if I knew I was exposed. Usually in 3 days with 1 treatment per day, the rash is gone.

I don't know that zanfel has exactly the same proportions of detergents as the hand scrub, but I'm going to buy a tub of Mean Green Power Hand Scrub for my next bout. Nobody sells it locally but im sure I can find it online. Zanfel is $30 - $40 for one ounce (compared to $3 - $4 per ounce for the hand scrub). If the hand cleaner doesn't work like zanfel, I'll still pay that insane price because it really does work that well. I've used it on the last 3 outbreaks with the same great results. I went to the doctor and got a steroid hot this time since I got it all over my manhood. I was always told face or genitals...go to Dr.

Sorry for the long post but hopefully it helps someone else who is hypersensitive to poison ivy like I am.

Thanks for the post.

I've so far either been good at avoidance or maybe I just don't react much to it. My wife on the other hand seems to be sensitive and even getting near the plants seems to effect her.

I'd pay the $30 for the wife if this works so well but I will await your soap results since it will be a while before the weather will be decent enough to wonder off the trails in anything but winter boots and gear.

I see Amazon carries it.

I usually get exposed by stems after the leaves have all died off...or when my dog gets it all over his fur...then my house. The "ivy" here actually has multiple versions including freestanding bushes, ivy that clings, ivy that runs along the ground. All of the parks by my house are covered with it. I'm pretty good at avoiding the plants but the oil can stay active on surfaces for months.

Compared to 10X that for trip to the ER for steroids that only half work, it's cheap!
Zanfel. See if I can remember that

Yeah, did a quick search and its out there; online, CVS, Walgreens, etc

You may not believe this but in my family for at least 3 generations, the cure for poison ivy is coating the area with your own urine and letting it dry. Has worked every time but it has to be your own (no sharing).

Back when I was a teen I helped some construction workers who dealt with Portland cement with bare hands. Their cleaning at the end of the day included exactly that, peeing in your own hands to neutralize the cement effects.
It was no poison Ivy but I can tell you it did work for that.
