One of the connector tabs on the capacitor for my greenie broke off (pic below). Is that something that can be re soldered or do I need to go to a shop (what kind of shop?) to get it replaced? I also noticed that the wires from the motor to the capacitor are showing some deterioration after 50+ years. Is that something that can be replaced? I didn't see any parts listing for old Mark V motors or separate wires.

Try soldering the wire back onto the capacitor terminal after cleaning the mating surfaces. You can stick the wire in the capacitor terminal hole as a last result when soldering. Just do not keep the soldering iron on the terminal for too long a period. Then try to see of the motor will operate. If not, note the capacitor label and buy another equal rating capacitor. If unable to find a capacitor, I have some used ones available, I would need the motor and capacitor information. Contact me off-line if needed.

'Replacing' the wires will require disassembly of the motor. As an alternative tape or cover with tubing the badly deteriorated section of the wires.

Capacitors die with age, so yours is likely close to death. Heat kills them faster, so soldering on it will just make it more likely to die. Go to any local electric motor shop with it in your hand, and they should have a new one for you. They are quite cheap too.

BTW 'What' makes a dry capacitor die with age? And how does soldering on the terminal accelerate that?




I agree new is better and easier. I just consider it likely unnecessary.
