I just got a phone call from my Father-in-Law down in Eureka (CA) - he was over at a friend's house who was cleaning out his garage and had a pile of 10ER stuff he was getting ready to haul to the dump (!). My Father-in-Law volunteered to haul it to the "dump" for him and promptly called me, knowing I'd want it. I'm on my way down there shortly…he said there were a couple of headstocks, a motor, some way tubes, and a bunch of odds and ends and that the guy said there was enough stuff there to put two machines together. Hard to believe someone would haul such stuff to the dump. More info once I get back from picking it all up.

You should go back and help your father-in-law help his neighbor. This guy needs to be watched. He could be a danger to himself and others.

Hard to imagine tossing such stuff, if for no other reason than who wants to pay the dump fee for a bunch of cast iron and thick-walled steel pipes? My Father-in-Law is a quality scrounger - he's the same person who got me the old Comet RAS from another friend who rebuilt it and then decided to get rid of it and gave it to my FIL since they were friends:



I still haven't had a chance to get that RAS set up - the motor purrs like a kitten and the saw has a 24" cross-cut capacity (!) I just need to clear some room in the shop and build a table for it…easier said than done to find the time…anyway, off to Eureka

Just got back from picking up the rescued lot - basically two complete 10E's and a few parts from a third machine - only one motor however:






One of the headstocks in a 10e and has a serial # of R23xxx (don't remember exact #), which if I remember correctly means its from '48-'49 and the R means it was made in San Francisco (?). The other headstock and all of it's associated pieces were painted blue at some point and it has no SS plate, so I assume no way to know serial # or other details on it. One interesting thing I noticed is that one set of the tubes are about twice as thick as the other set - both of my existing 10e have the thicker tubes - did they switch to thinner tubes at some point?

I found the thicker 10ER tubes really clean up nice for use as Mark V way tubes. The dozen or so that I have done did not have rust pits like the later tubes and seems to have a better finish or material to prevent the pitting. I just clean up two recently that really came out nice looking.

The light blue headstock is a 10E. The light blue tailstock is a 10ER.

The 'original' blue is a 10ER.

That's very fortuitous! I'm very glad that stuff got intercepted on its way to the dump.

Am I remembering correctly that some 10er headstocks have the serial stamped on them somewhere in addition to the logo plate? I'd have to go out and look to be sure, but I think one of mine has the serial number stamped low on the headstock, over where the tube is.

JPG, are you saying that the blue headstock and related parts are the original color? If so, I'd never heard of a 10E/ER coming in blue (?) I just figured someone painted it that color. Hard to see in the photos but the lot also included a jig saw, which is standing up on the left in the back…not sure if it is complete or not, as I've never checked out a 10E/ER jigsaw before.
