Update, and another question

Finally got the tie bar off my '84. Don't know if it was the Evaporust, the Free All, the heat, or just beating the bejesus out of it with a hammer and block, but it finally surrendered. (Surprising how much of the joint was dry, where the penetrating oil didn't penetrate)

Question; why is there no mention of the use of anti-seize compound in dissimilar metal fittings, like steel setscrews in aluminum castings? Tried 'Search' and found nothing. If I were going to screw a steel sparkplug into an aluminum head, I would apply anti-seize on the threads to make sure I could take it apart later. It would seem to follow that if a steel setscrew was being installed in aluminum, the same would follow. Understand one is a high heat environment and the other isn't, but seizure appears possible in both cases.

Is there a reason?

I hope the setscrews in the SS do not reach the operating temperature of those spark plugs.

I used to build aircraft, where dissimilar metal protection was MANDATORY!

Here, on our Shopsmiths, it isn't.

Why?

Because, we're not supposed to be running (or storing) our power tools in adverse weather, unlike aircraft, boats or cars.

Find an old "skil"saw, or drill at a garage sale, and pull it apart. (Look for something with an aluminum body, and steel screws.) See the anti-seize? I didn't either.

If I'm not mistaken, yours was in a flood caused by a hurricane. That would have been exposed to salt water. Not quite what the Shopsmith was designed for.
