Here is a SS promotion from 1978. My brother bought his Mark V serial #20474 at this show. I now own it, along with my 1982 serial #129708 Mark V and was cleaning up my files when I found this. The 1978 runs great and last year added a double bearing quill. I love the prices.

Not too much.
$895 in 1978 = $3243 now. New Mark 5 510 = $3379.
I'd say the extra $136 is worth the extra machine you're getting.

Right on, Mike! It's us old guys that have a hard time realizing that all things have inflated since then.

Not just automobiles.
I was at about $8.00 / hour back in 78!

Here is the 1964 Sears Craftsmen catalog page for the "Sears Best" Radial-Arm Saw that was given to me by my wife's uncle in the late 80's. It cost $219.95 in '64' and in today's dollars that would be $1676.54.
However, it is worth noting that this saw has never needed a repair or part to be replaced. It's all metal - no plastic parts - solid cast iron and steel; 2 hp ball bearing motor; all chromed handles. I fitted it with a lazer projecting line and Forrest blade, but other than that it's original and now 50 years old and going strong. This saw is the greatest crosscutting saw I have ever owned.
I am sure you can buy a Radial Arm Saw for much less than $1600 today, but was it built the way tools USED to be built in the USA. Shopsmith is still a bargain at today's prices because they too are built to last.
