Has anyone tried outboard turning on their shopsmith?

If so, can you tell me about your setup? what are you using for a tool rest/tool rest support?

I have maxed out the swing of the lathe and have a few larger pieces i would rather not cut down if i could turn a larger bowl.

You could try removing the carriage, like this, but the tool rest will still be the problem.

Unless you are using a PowerPro or can figure out how to extend the Speed reducer past the end of the frame It really is not possible nor would I recommend it.

I would not dream of turning anything larger than 16" on the Shopsmith's rather rapid 750 RPM slow speed. 100 - 200 would be much better. perhaps a bit quicker (500 or so) once things are round and balanced. I have turned 15 1/2" at 750 and it was kinda scary to get that much wood moving that quickly.

On that same note.... anyone have a speed reducer they may want to part with?
